SYNOPSIS
Returning to the town of my early childhood, memories and fantasies begin to resurface. As I wander through my former “fairyland,” the familiar turns strange, and the boundaries between memory and fiction slowly dissolve, leaving me adrift in uncertainty.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Wandering in Fairyland began without a plan. While first learning to use a camera, I returned to Yihua, where I had lived as a small child, and instinctively filmed rivers, streets and family life. Revisiting the footage more than a year later, I felt an inexplicable familiarity. Having left before I was three, was I remembering lived experience, or stories, photographs and imagination?
I interwove these images with family photographs, conversations, my grandfather’s singing, childhood diaries and old television footage, allowing their contradictions to remain. This search led me to see media as more than a container for memory: it also helps shape the past we believe we remember.
